In 1960 British colonial rule in Cyprus finally came to an end, but it was not the end for UK forces on the Island. In Cold War Europe, the Sovereign bases, which had been retained after Cypriot Independence, provided a valuable strategic forward base in the Middle East. British Troops soon had another role - trying to keep the peace on the Island itself.
