When troops deploy to Afghanistan, it normally means leaving their loved ones behind and spending months apart.

But two US Marines, who have been married for three years, have just begun a year-long tour at Camp Leatherneck together, the first time they have deployed together.

Sergeant Andrew Johnson has already completed two tours of Iraq as a canine handler, searching for IEDs with his dog. But for Sergeant Frances Johnson this is her first deployment.

While Andrew and Frances are in Afghanistan together, there is one key member of the family who is far away. Their two year-old son Noah, who is being cared for by grandparents back home in Colorado.

Noah's parents could be deployed for up to a year. But Andrew and Frances want to make sure they are still part of their son's life even though they are thousands of miles apart.

British Forces News spoke to them in Camp Leatherneck.
